Tool Upgrade - QOTW

Question of the Week

I want to upgrade my speedball lino cutter to something I can use to carve wood. What tools would you recommend?

A.J.

My recommendation when buying any tools is to go with the mid-tier option that you can afford. Your budget should be the number one priority, I know it's tempting to go with the high end set of tools, but a good mid-tier set is more than enough. When it comes to brands, I personally only have used a few.

Mikisyo PowerGrip has a set that will work well with wood. When I got mine, these were $30 for the set, but thanks to inflation they have gone up to $50. That is still a decent price for a set of 5 gouges considering they are Japanese made and carbon steel.

If you want something a little more high-end then I would go for the FlexCut Beginners Set. I have the Micro Palm Set I use for details. These sets start at around $75 so they are more expensive, but comparable in quality to the PowerGrip. If you only need one specific size and gouge blade, they also sell them individually.

Hey, hold-up!
